AMA President, Dr Andrew Pesce, today welcomed the approval of the alcopops tax by the Senate and said it should be followed by more comprehensive measures to combat binge drinking. „The Government should prohibit the targeted marketing of alcohol products to teenagers and adolescents, and ban the sponsorship of sporting events by alcohol manufacturers,“ he said. New Jersey, USA: Survey results have prompted borough school officials to revisit their drug and alcohol policy for high school athletes, a review that could lead to changes as early as January. „There have always been — over the years — questions about the training rules,“ superintendent John Kazmark said. The survey, conducted online in early June, asked 473 parents, student-athletes, staff members and coaches if the current rules were fair and effective.

Students at the University of California at Davis are limiting the amount of high-risk drinking they participate in as a result of a major prevention initiative, a new survey concludes.
UC Davis‘ Safe Party Initiative focused on reducing alcohol-related problems at off-campus parties; students participating in a 2003 survey said roughly one-third of alcohol-related problems take place at such parties. The program included outreach efforts, a program website, and messages targeting incoming students, student-athletes, and members of fraternities and sororities. (Source: Join Together, 4/17/09)

The Australian Medical Association says the government must call an urgent summit on alcohol advertising. AMA President, Dr Rosanna Capolingua, congratulated the distilling industry for its decision to voluntarily cease daytime television advertising, but said much more was needed. „We’ve got to break this link between sporting heroes and alcohol.“ „The only acceptable outcome is that there should be no alcohol advertising at times when children are watching.“ „If the alcohol industry won’t act – then government must.“ (Source: Medical News Today, 4/5/09)
