D: Gefordert wird: Kein später Alkohol an Tankstellen

Donnerstag 16.

USA: Federal Alcohol Taxes Due for Increase

Donnerstag 16. September 2010 von htm

Fresh Story Blog: Despite the fact that local, state, and federal lawmakers are desperate to plug holes in their budgets, advocates of alcohol taxes have struggled to gain traction. They should take heart from a Fresh Story blog post, the first in a series, published online on Aug. 31.
It’s an excellent primer on the history of federal alcohol taxes and why it makes sense to raise them now.
Taxes on alcohol have a long history in the United States. In fact, according to Fresh Story, “the first tax ever enacted by the U.S. Congress was a tax on distilled spirits … in 1791.” While they now contribute less than 1% of federal revenue, taxes on alcohol used to contribute a significant portion of federal revenue — 11% as recently as 1941. Utah’s Underage Drinking Campaign Working, Surveys Suggest

Donnerstag 16. September 2010 von htm

Supporters of a Utah campaign to cut underage drinking say surveys show it is working, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Sept. 9.
Surveys performed in 2007 and 2009 found 5,500 fewer school children reported using alcohol during the past 30 days, and 2,600 fewer reported binge drinking over the same time period.
Gov. Gary Herbert said that data show that the state’s media and education campaign, ParentsEmpowered.org, is successful.
Another survey found that the campaign has reached over 125,000 parents, said Art Brown, president of Mother’s Against Drunk Driving Utah. (Source: Join Together, 9/14/10)

Public health science and the global strategy on alcohol

Mittwoch 15. September 2010 von htm

Article by Thomas F Babor, a. Department of Community Medicine, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington, CT, 06030, United States of America.
Science plays an increasingly important role in the development of international health policy and this has certainly been true in the case of a global response to alcohol-related problems. In May 2010, the World Health Assembly adopted resolution EB126.R11, Global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol,1 based in part on an impressive amount of evidence on both alcohol’s contribution to the global burden of disease and the policies capable of ameliorating the harm it causes.2 Now that the strategy has been adopted, it is time for public health science to take on two new challenges. The first is to expand the evidence base so that it applies not just to the developed countries where most of the world’s alcohol consumption is concentrated, but also to the low- and middle-income countries where alcohol consumption is increasing and where the policy response is still weak. The second challenge is to use scientific research to guide the adoption of effective alcohol policies at the national and international levels. …. Augsburg: Am Wochenende fließt der Alkohol in Strömen

Mittwoch 15.

Mittwoch 15.

Violence Fueled by Substance Abuse, Not Mental Illness

Dienstag 14. September 2010 von htm

Violent crimes rates are no higher for mentally ill people with substance abuse than for others who abuse drugs and alcohol, The Guardian reported Sept. 6. Researchers in Sweden and the United Kingdom reviewed crime-registry data for 3,700 patients with bipolar disorder and 8,000 patients with schizophrenia over a 30-year period and compared results with the general population. Crime rates were six to seven times higher for patients with mental illness and substance abuse than for the population overall, but no higher than those for people with substance abuse who had no mental-health problems. …
„The relationship between violent crime and serious mental illness can be explained by alcohol and substance abuse,” said Dr. Seena Fazel, M.D., forensic psychiatrist and senior lecturer at the University of Oxford and lead author of the research. (Source: Join Together, 9/13/10)

Grundschulkinder tranken Wodka – Jugendamt prüft Fall

Dienstag 14.
