Our “Alcohol’s harm to others” conference took place on 3 June in Edinburgh. Around 100 delegates attended to hear from expert speakers and workshop leaders on the impact of excessive drinking on people other than the drinker, with a particular focus on children and young people.

A consultation on minimum pricing and other options for Northern Ireland is currently open.
Northern Ireland’s Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety are seeking views on setting a minimum price per unit of alcohol. A press release and BBC report announced the move earlier this year.
The survey „forms part of the stakeholder consultation process on minimum pricing of alcohol in Northern Ireland and provides an opportunity for comment on plans to crack down on the availability of cheap alcohol.“ It also includes questions on:
* banning ‚below-cost‘ selling of alcohol
* banning sale of alcohol below level of Duty and VAT
* increasing taxation to address the harms of problem drinking
* considerations in relation to introducing a social responsibility levy

However the report also finds some variations, suggesting further research and monitoring. Findings and recommendations include:
* The relationship between alcohol misuse and poor sexual health outcomes means there is an urgent need for the integration of health services for young people. It should be routine for professionals to address sexual health and alcohol issues simultaneously.
* Campaigns/services that aim to address teenage conception should include alcohol consumption in young men as well as young women, since alcohol misuse in both sexes independently predicts teenage pregnancy and sexual infections
* Attention needs to be paid to local factors that may play a role in enhancing risk of conception among groups of young people. (Source: Alcohol Policy UK, 06/09/11)

Ein Marathonlauf bedeutet enormen Stress für den Körper: Entzündungsprozesse werden angekurbelt, dass Immunsystem schwächelt und die Athleten sind anfälliger für Erkältungen. Der tägliche Konsum alkoholfreien Weißbiers kann diese negativen Effekte abschwächen, zeigt eine Münchner Studie. Sie soll im Januar in der Fachzeitschrift „Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise“ (MSSE) veröffentlicht werden.
Dazu untersuchten Sportmediziner der TU München 277 Probanden drei Wochen vor und zwei Wochen nach dem München Marathon 2009. Ein Teil der Teilnehmer hatte täglich 1,5 Liter „echtes“ alkoholfreies Weizenbiers getrunken, die andere Hälfte erhielt ein Placebo, das ebenso aussah und schmeckte, aber keine Phenole enthielt. THE cost of some cask wine could quadruple, with Health Minister Nicola Roxon signing off on a plan to develop a nationwide minimum floor price for alcohol. The National Preventive Health Agency has been asked to „develop the concept“ as part of a plan approved by Ms Roxon but yet to be approved by her state counterparts.

Geisenfeld (GZ) An den drei Festivaltagen wird im Bereich der Bewegungsinseln kein Alkohol ausgeschenkt, und der Raum vor der Stadtpfarrkirche wird im Zuge der Aktion „Alkohol? Kenn dein Limit“ zu einem Eventareal.
Die Bundeszentrale für gesundheitliche Aufklärung (BZgA) begleitet die Festivals des Sports und wird auch in Geisenfeld mit ihrer Aktion „Alkohol? Kenn dein Limit“ mitmachen, bei der sie vom Verband privater Krankenkassen unterstützt wird. Das Eventareal vor der Kirche wird sich drei Tage lang in einem attraktiven Plower-Power-Design samt Hippiebus präsentieren. Vor allem junge Besucher ab 16 Jahren will man animieren, ihr Limit sportlich auszutesten – ob beim Klettern an der Boulderwand oder bei verschiedenen Spiel- und Mitmachangeboten. Wie sich der Konsum von Alkohol auf die Wahrnehmungs-, Konzentrations- und Reaktionsfähigkeit auswirkt, können die Jugendlichen im Rauschbrillenparcours erleben. A public high school in Long Island, New York is opening an in-house drug and alcohol abuse clinic. According to Daytop Treatment Services, which will run the clinic, it is the first such facility in New York State and possibly in the United States.
Reuters reports that the clinic is opening in response to a jump in substance abuse among students. It will be housed at the William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach, NY, and will open in August. The clinic will provide counseling, but will not dispense methadone or other medications. (Source: Join Together, 06/09/11)

A sluggish economy has not stopped alcohol sales, according to industry analysts who say alcoholic beverage sales grew by nearly 10 percent from May 2010 to May 2011.
During that period, the unemployment rate was more than 9 percent, CNNMoney reports. Esther Kwon, an alcohol industry analyst for Standard & Poor’s, said that in a recession, people continue to drink, although they tend to drink more at home instead of in a bar. … (Source: Join Together, 06/09/11)

Misserfolg als Erfolg: Der Gemeinderat Bauma freut sich darüber, dass bei neun Alkohol- und Tabaktestkäufen keinem der Jugendlichen das Gewünschte verkauft wurde.
