Bei den schon seit 2005 laufenden EU-Beitrittsverhandlungen gehen die EU und die Türkei nun einen Schritt weiter. Am heutigen Dienstag sind Gespräche über Fragen der Besteuerung vereinbart worden. Somit laufen die Verhandlungen erst in elf der 35 Kapitel, in denen die Gespräche aufgeteilt sind. Die Türkei müsse ihre überhöhten Alkohol-Import-Aufschläge senken. Sweden will take over presidency in the European Union from July 2009. Prevention of alcohol-related harm is one of the areas that will be prioritized during the Swedish presidency. The goal is to support the implementation of the alcohol strategy adopted by the EU commission in 2006. The Swedish presidency will give particular priority to reduce the impact of advertising and marketing on young people. It considers it important to strengthen the protection of children and young people. Other issues to which the Presidency
wants to draw attention include the influence of price on the development of damage and the effects of harmful alcohol consumption on healthy and dignified ageing. (Source: ACTIVE-newsletter July 09)

Rosé bleibt Rosé: Nach monatelangen Protesten französischer Winzer hat die Europäische Kommission einen umstrittenen Vorschlag zurückgezogen, erstmals die Herstellung des rosafarbenen Weines durch das Zusammenschütten von Rot- und Weißwein zu erlauben. „Es wird keine Änderung in den Produktionsregeln für Roséwein geben“, erklärte Landwirtschaftskommissarin Mariann Fischer Boel. Konferenz auf hohem Niveau zur Gesundheit von jungen Leuten „Sei gesund, sei dich selber“, Brüssel, 9./10. Juli 2009. EU-Gesundheits-Kommissarin Androulla Vassiliou wird Gastgeberin dieser Konferenz sein. Der Anlass wird in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Europ. Jugendforum und der WHO organisiert. Es gibt zwei parallele Sessionen:
• Youth health issues
• Youth health in key settings
Vorausgehend findet ein Jugendlager statt, wo die Beiträge zu den Debatten vorbereitet werden. Vorher wird auch ein Wettbewerb „Jugend und Gesundheit“ mit Videos und Fotos stattfinden und die Arbeiten der Gewinner werden an der Konferenz ausgestellt. In Switzerland an interesting debate around the impact of the EU legislation on alcohol advertising on TV has taken place in recent weeks. This relates to the Media agreement between Switzerland and the EU where Switzerland is associated as a full partner in all the activities in the MEDIA programme (Swiss professionals in the cinema and audiovisual sectors are able to benefit from the same incentives as their colleagues in the EU countries). This agreement requires Switzerland to amend its broadcasting legislation in order to comply with the ‘Audiovisual Media Services Directive’ with regard to the law applicable to advertising. Consequently, advertising on TV by foreign channels (directed at Switzerland) will not be regulated by Swiss law but by a national law of the State from which the channel is being broadcasted. This required the Swiss Parliament to make changes in the current national legislation by November this year. (The debate is now going on. The National Council (big chamber) has voted in favour and the Federal Council (small chamber) has voted against alcohol advertising on tv. High level Conference on the Health of young people “Be healthy, be yourself”, Brussels, 9-10 July 2009.
Commissioner for Health Androulla Vassiliou will be hosting a high level conference on Youth health in Brussels. This event is organized in cooperation with the European Youth Forum and the World Health Organization. There will be two parallel sessions on:
• Youth health issues
• Youth health in key settings
There will be a ‘Youth camp’ previous to the Conference, where they will prepare their input to the debates on the priority themes at the Conference. Prior to the event there will be a competition of ‘youth and health’ videos and pictures and the winning entries will be displayed at the conference. Furthermore, a blog around the main topics of the conference is operating on the Youth Health Initiative’s website. More information (Source: Eurocare Newsletter April/May 09)
