Starbucks will be offering regional beer and wine in some of its stores. TIME reported Oct. 19 that the addition of alcohol on the menu is meant to increase evening traffic; 70 percent of Starbucks customers visit the shops before 2 pm.
A remodeled store in Seattle is the first to offer alcohol. „What we’ve done is we’ve tried to create a variety of options that you might find in more of a restaurant at night,“ said Kris Engskov, regional vice president at Starbucks. (Source: Join Together, 10/20/10)

Three Oklahoma officials urged state lawmakers to raise the alcohol tax to help address a 2012 fiscal year budget deficit that could be as large as $800 million, the Associated Press reported Oct. 14.
Health Commissioner Terry Cline and Mental Health Commissioner Terri White were joined by Department of Human Services director Howard Hendrick in advocating for the alcohol tax increase.
Cline said that his agency cut employees and services to meet a 15 percent cut for the past two years. „One or two years of cuts to that infrastructure could result in decades of loss in terms of well-being for constituents in our system,“ he said. (Source: Join Together, 10/18/10)

Alkotest Nichts geht mehr: Ist der Fahrer betrunken, setzt der Alkolock die Zündung außer Kraft, das Fahrzeug kann nicht starten. 30 Lkw werden jetzt mit diesen Geräten ausgerüstet. In Schweden sind Alkolocks bereits Standard.
Noch ist es ein Testlauf. Für Verkehrsministerin Doris Bures bedeuten die Alkohol-Interlocks aber eine seriöse Option, die Verkehrssicherheit zu erhöhen.

Wie die zuständige Medienanstalt LPR Hessen auf Anfrage des Branchendienstes „Kontakter“ bestätigt, werde auch „X-Diaries“ von der Behörde geprüft. Sprecherin Annette Schriefers sagt: „Wir haben den Sender in einem Schreiben sehr deutlich darauf hingewiesen, dass wir ‚X-Diaries‘ im Hinblick auf den Jugendschutz prüfen“. Let’s start with the bad news: binge drinking is strongly correlated with dangerous driving, assault, risky sex and long-term illness. That’s according to TIME magazine, which got its information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
So what’s the good news? Some of the time, people aren’t binge drinking when they consume alcohol.
If that sounds weak to you, it is: 90 percent of the alcohol teenagers drink — and more than half of the alcohol adults drink — is consumed during binges. Furthermore, binge drinking rates haven’t declined in fifteen years. (Source: Join Together, 10/15/10)
