Adolescents are being bombarded with alcohol marketing online as firms exploit new-media tools and lax regulation to put their brand images and information in front of young drinkers, according to a new report.
HealthDay News reported May 19 that American University professor Kathryn Montgomery — author of the report, Alcohol Marketing in the Digital Age (PDF) — said that alcohol is being sold through „a multiplicity of platforms throughout the day and night that includes online, offline, mobile, digital, music, video — a whole range of different ways that consumers interact with new digital marketing.“ (Source: Join Together, 5/21/10) our online-comment: Ridiculous is the fact that we allow an industry at all to advertise and promote their products which damage our health, reduce our quality of life and cost us billions each year in social costs. To say the state is making money from alcohol is ridiculous as well, when we compare the very small alcohol taxes with the enormous alcohol related social costs.
To speak with the children is a nice suggestion, often heard from the alcohol industry. A very small percentage of parents does it, the rest will use TV and the Web as babysitters as before.

mit unserem Online-Kommentar: In Nantes gab es auf 10’000 Teilnehmer am Apéro-Géant einen Toten. Eine Woche später hier einen in „bester Partylaune“ ertrunkenen jungen Schweizer aus der Gegend. Bei wahrscheinlich viel weniger Partygästen. Ist das auch nicht so schlimm? Nach den ersten Sensationsberichten geht man wieder zur Tagesordnung über. Man kann ja doch nichts machen! Doch, man könnte, wenn man wollte!

St. Gallen: Warum darf die Öffentlichkeit nicht erfahren, wer solche Straftaten begeht? Am Samstag, 22.05.2010, um 0147 Uhr, verursachte ein Fahrzeuglenker auf der Zürcher Straße einen Selbstunfall. Das Auto wurde stadteinwärts gelenkt. Auf Höhe der Zürcher Straße Nr. 82 prallte der Wagen ungebremst gegen ein parkiertes Auto. Dabei wurden zwei weitere parkierte Fahrzeuge beschädigt. Beim Fahrzeuglenker stellte sich heraus, daß er den Personenwagen trotz Alkohol- und Drogenkonsum gelenkt hatte. Es wurde eine Blut- und Urinprobe angeordnet. Da er keinen Führerausweis besaß, konnte dieser auch nicht eingezogen werden. Es entstand beträchtlicher Sachschaden, verletzt wurde niemand. Dabei ist die St. Galler Justizdirektorin als „scharfer Hund“ bekannt. Offenbar kommt Datenschutz vor Prävention. Immerhin wurde eine Blutprobe entnommen. Der Verdacht bleibt natürlich bestehen, dass hier jemand von Bedeutung geschützt wird. Vielleicht waren auch nur die kompetenten Beamten im wohlverdienten Pfingsturlaub.

Die Polizei in Paris hat sich am Sonntag auf eine Massenparty am Fuße des Eiffelturms vorbereitet, die über das Internet-Netzwerk Facebook organisiert wurde. Mit mobilen Einsatzkommandos solle ein Ausufern der Party verhindert werden, teilte die Polizeipräfektur mit. Die Initiatoren des sogenannten „Apéro géant“ („Riesenumtrunk“) erwarten bis zu 50.000 Menschen auf dem Marsfeld. Die Präfektur hatte die Massenparty und den Alkoholkonsum auf dem Platz zwar verboten, die Planungen bei Facebook wurden jedoch fortgesetzt. Geneva, 20 June 2010. At its sixty-third World Health Assembly, the 193 Member States of the World Health Organization have adopted, in a consensus vote, the eagerly awaited Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol.
In the two-hour long debate at the Assembly, all member states acknowledged the harmful use of alcohol as a major public health issue. In the many member state interventions, delegates pointed to the global aspects of the problem and requested that alcohol problems receive a higher priority at the WHO and that more resources be allocated to address those problems and to implement the new global strategy.
The important concerns identified in the debate included the increasing culture of binge drinking among young people worldwide, and the expanding influence of the alcohol marketing and advertising. Delegates welcomed the varied evidence-based measures included in the strategy and their potential for successfully addressing alcohol problems.
The resolution was adopted with one amendment proposed by Thailand on behalf of the SEARO countries asking for adequate financial and human resources for implementation (inserted in par. 4 (1)).
The WHO estimates that in 2004, 2.5 million people worldwide died of alcohol-related causes (mainly heart and liver disease, road accidents, suicides and various cancers), representing 3.8 % of all deaths and 4,6% of the global burden of disease.
The harmful use of alcohol has a serious effect on public health and is considered to be one of the main risk factors for poor health globally, the strategy document says.
The resolution calls on the member states of the WHO to take public policy measures to reduce the harmful consumption of alcohol. It highlights the effectiveness of focusing on policies regarding pricing, availability and marketing of alcohol.
However the recommendations in the Strategy are not binding, they are meant to serve as guidance to WHO’s Member States.
Mariann Skar, Secretary General of Eurocare stated “We warmly welcome the decision by the WHA to adopt a global strategy on alcohol. This is a key starting point in addressing the global threat to public health and social wellbeing represented by the harmful use of alcohol” and she added “Europe has a strong position and responsibility, being the world’s leader on alcohol consumption and an important exporter of alcoholic beverages“. She regretted that „we are exporting our drinking practices and norms to countries that lack the capability and capacity to meet the additional public health burden that results from them”.
The Global Alcohol Policy Alliance (GAPA) has as well welcomed the decision by the World Health Assembly, it’s chairman, Derek Rutherford said: „Concerted action to reduce global alcohol problems is long overdue. Today’s decision by the World Health Assembly is an important first step to address them. The strategy goes a long way in recognizing the transnational aspects of the alcohol issue. GAPA appreciates the wide range of supportive statements by WHO member states from both developed and developing countries in the discussion.“ (Source: Eurocare, 5/23/10)

Auf ihrer sechsten Weltgesundheitstagung haben die 193 Mitgliedsstaaten der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) am 20. Mai 2010 die ungeduldig erwartete Globale Strategie zur Senkung des schädlichen Gebrauchs von Alkohol einmütig angenommen.
In der zweistündigen Debatte wurde der schädliche Alkoholkonsum als wesentliches Gesundheitsproblem von allen Mitgliedsstaaten anerkannt. Die Delegierten betonten die weltweiten Aspekte dieses Problems und forderten die WHO zu einer höheren Priorisierung der alkoholbedingten Schäden auf und verlangten mehr Mittel zu ihrer Bewältigung und der Umsetzung der neuen globalen Strategie.
Unter den angesprochenen Problemen wurde die weltweite Zunahme des Rauschtrinkens bei Jugendlichen und der wachsende Einfluss der Alkoholwerbung und -vermarktung als besorgniserregend festgestellt. Die Delegierten begrüßten die verschiedenartigen evidenzbasierten Maßnahmen und ihr Potenzial zur Begegnung der Alkoholprobleme, die in die globale Strategie aufgenommen wurden.
Die Resolution wurde mit einer durch Thailand eingebrachten Änderung zur angemessenen finanziellen und materiellen Ausstattung zur Umsetzung der Strategie in Südostasien verabschiedet…. Debatte über den Umgang mit Generika. Die WHO erkennt den Handel mit unzuverlässigen Medikamenten als wachsendes Problem. Die WHO-Generalversammlung hat neue Strategien zur Bekämpfung von Alkoholmissbrauch und ungesunder Nahrung erarbeitet. Eine Entschliessung gegen illegal produzierte Medikamente führte zu einem Streit um die Berechtigung von Generika. Die Weltgesundheitskonferenz WHA, die Generalversammlung der Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO, hat am Freitagabend in Genf nach einwöchiger Arbeit die letzten Entschliessungen verabschiedet. Sie legen Strategien und Empfehlungen für die WHO fest und setzen den Budgetrahmen für die Arbeit der Organisation. …Die WHO sieht als grossen Erfolg die Verabschiedung ihrer ersten Richtlinien zur Eindämmung des Alkohol-Missbrauchs. … (Quelle: NZZ, 22.5.10) Kommentar: Nun hat die NZZ wenigstens im letzten Abschnitt auf die Alkohol-Strategie kurz hingewiesen. Unter dem Untertitel „Empfehlung gegen Fast Food“. Die Alkohollobby muss einen gewaltigen Druck auf die Medien ausüben, dass diese sich kaum getrauen, das Thema aufzugreifen.

Alkohol steht an dritter Stelle der Risikofaktoren für einen vorzeitigen Tod. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation kämpft nun gegen die weltweit anerkannte Droge und setzt auf Werbebeschränkung und Verkaufshindernisse.
Im Kampf gegen den Alkoholmissbrauch fordert die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) das Verbot von Sonderangeboten für alkoholische Getränke. Auch müsse ausdrücklich an Jugendliche gerichtete Alkoholwerbung untersagt werden, heißt es in einer von der UN-Organisation in Genf verabschiedeten Strategie. The global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol was adopted by consensus at the annual assembly of the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday 20 May. According to news agency Reuters health ministers agreed to try to curb binge drinking and other growing forms of excessive alcohol use through higher taxes on alcoholic drinks and tighter marketing regulations.
The WHO estimates that risks linked to alcohol cause 2.5 million deaths a year from heart and liver disease, road accidents, suicides and various cancers — 3.8 percent of all deaths. It is the third leading risk factor for premature deaths and disabilities worldwide.
„Alcohol is usually not perceived as a killer, though it is,“ Shekhar Saxena, director of WHO’s department of mental health and substance abuse, told a news briefing.
Despite growing abuse and youth drinking at an earlier age in many countries, half of WHO members do not have a national alcohol policy, according to WHO expert Vladimir Poznyak.
„The biggest changes might happen in those countries which have no alcohol control institutions or regulatory framework for alcohol consumption,“ he told Reuters.
