Finland takes effective measures against alcohol related deaths. The leading cause of death in Finland
is excessive drinking. Therefore, Finland’s parliament unanimously agreed to raise the taxes on alcohol by up to 10% – beer and wine is set to rise by three percent and spirits by seven percent. This is the second time this year the Finish government is increasing alcohol taxation. After it had been raised by 10% in January, the government announced in March this year that they want to rise again, because of health concerns. The rise this year will be effective from October 2009. Finland is, along with Sweden and Ireland, one of the countries that have the highest taxes on alcohol in Europe. Sweden will take over presidency in the European Union from July 2009. Prevention of alcohol-related harm is one of the areas that will be prioritized during the Swedish presidency. The goal is to support the implementation of the alcohol strategy adopted by the EU commission in 2006. The Swedish presidency will give particular priority to reduce the impact of advertising and marketing on young people. It considers it important to strengthen the protection of children and young people. Other issues to which the Presidency
wants to draw attention include the influence of price on the development of damage and the effects of harmful alcohol consumption on healthy and dignified ageing. (Source: ACTIVE-newsletter July 09)

Many studies have suggested that using alcohol in moderation may help heart health and even prevent diabetes and dementia, but some scientists are questioning the purported benefits of moderate drinking, the New York Times reported June 16. Kaye Middleton Fillmore, a retired sociologist from the University of California at San Francisco, suggested that moderate drinking is simply what healthy people do, as well as exercising and eating right. Tim Naimi of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that moderate drinkers are healthier, wealthier, and more educated and that these social advantages have nothing to do with their drinking. Doctors leaders from the British Medical Association Scotland called for an end to the ridiculous pricing of alcohol for off sales in light of findings from the Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey (SALSUS). The survey shows that 52% of 13 year olds and 82% of 15 year olds have had at least one alcoholic drink and that shops and off-licences were the second most common source for purchasing alcohol. Immer öfter sind Tankstellen zu später Stunde Treffpunkt für Jugendliche und deren Versorgungsstätte mit Alkohol. Deshalb plant Baden-Württemberg ab kommendem Jahr ein Verkaufsverbot für alkoholische Getränke nach 22 Uhr. Weil dies die Existenz einiger Tankstellen gefährden könnte, bietet die Branche besseren Jugendschutz an. Kinder die mit einem alkoholkranken Vater leben, haben ein dramatisch erhöhtes Risiko als Teenager Binge Drinker zu werden, gemäss neuer Forschung der Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in USA. Forscher sagten, dass mehr als 10% der 12-17-jährigen Kinder von Alkoholikern während des letzten Jahres Alkohol missbräuchlich oder als Binge Drinker konsumiert hatten, verglichen mit 4,7% der Kinder mit Vätern die mässig tranken und 3% der Kinder deren Väter überhaupt keinen Alkohol tranken. Eilige Zugspassagiere finden im Bahnhof eine breite Auswahl an gekühltem Bier. Die Schweizerische Fachstelle für Alkohol- und andere Drogenprobleme (SFA) hat sich in grossen Bahnhöfen umgesehen. Fazit der Beobachtung: Das Angebot an Bieren in 5-dl-Büchsen ist äusserst breit. Wer weniger trinken möchte, hat das Nachsehen. Die vielen grossen Biere setzen gerade für junge Konsumentinnen und Konsumenten einen problematischen Trinkstandard. Die SFA ruft den Detailhandel auf, kleinere Verpackungseinheiten zu fördern.

Legale Drogen haben 2007 in Deutschland im Vergleich zu Heroin oder Cannabis über 40 Mal so häufig den Tod von Menschen verursacht. Knapp 58 000 Menschen waren infolge von Medikamentenmissbrauch oder durch den Konsum von Alkohol oder Tabak gestorben, wie das Statistische Bundesamt anlässlich des Internationalen Tags gegen Drogenmissbrauch am Freitag (26. Koordiniertes Vorgehen im Kampf gegen Gewalt an Sportanlässen in der Schweiz. Sportverbände und Behörden haben eine gemeinsame Strategie ausgearbeitet, um für mehr Sicherheit an Fussball- und Eishockeyspielen zu sorgen. Offen ist, wie die Massnahmen finanziert werden sollen. Weiteren Handlungsbedarf hat die Projektgruppe beim Ausschank von Alkohol geortet. Dieser soll grundsätzlich eingeschränkt werden.
