The lasting effect of brief alcohol interventions

A unique study from Norway discerned lasting benefits from a brief alcohol intervention nine years after risky drinkers had been identified during mass screening for heart disease and other medical risk factors.

TOP NEWS: “Big Alcohol” agenda exposed

Researchers from the Curtin University of Technology in Australia have uncovered some of the secret workings and concerns of the international alcohol industry.
The information was uncovered by Curtin’s WA Tobacco Document Searching Program. This Program looks at confidential tobacco industry documents that have been accessible since the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) which required that millions of previously internal tobacco industry documents were to be made publicly available. “We realised that some international tobacco companies have owned alcohol companies, so we could obtain information on this industry as well,” said Mike Daube, Curtin’s Professor of Health Policy. These once confidential internal documents provide new evidence on the drinks industry’s concerns about possible alcohol control measures as well as the arguments and strategies they use to prevent any action that might impact on their sales. Carlsberg’s criticised marketing practices in Africa

Carlsberg’s breach of its code of conduct. Carlsberg, the Danish beer giant, has been heavily criticised for its marketing practices in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, which has numerous alcohol problems. Kaliber, a Swedish National Radio programme known for its well researched journalism, aired last weekend a program about alcohol consumption in Malawi and the role of the international alcohol industries, especially Carlsberg. New Wiki Style Alcohol Portal

The portal aims to examine governance processes in the area of alcohol and public policy and to make connections between the alcohol industry, public policy makers and their relationships with the media, scientists and current research and debates within the field. The portal basically contains information about industry and their connections and it is done in a wiki style to enable those interested to follow links between alcohol stakeholders. The project is a work in progress and contributions/corrections are very welcome. Although the focus is Scottish the portal is growing. Conference on the Health of young people in Brussels

High level Conference on the Health of young people “Be healthy, be yourself”, Brussels, 9-10 July 2009.
Commissioner for Health Androulla Vassiliou will be hosting a high level conference on Youth health in Brussels. This event is organized in cooperation with the European Youth Forum and the World Health Organization. There will be two parallel sessions on:
• Youth health issues
• Youth health in key settings
There will be a ‘Youth camp’ previous to the Conference, where they will prepare their input to the debates on the priority themes at the Conference. Prior to the event there will be a competition of ‘youth and health’ videos and pictures and the winning entries will be displayed at the conference. Homelessness and Alcohol

As part of its commitment in the framework of the European Alcohol and Health Forum, FEANTSA has gathered relevant information relating to homelessness and alcohol addiction. The present document and the online resource page aim at raising awareness on the scope and nature of the problem and at providing policy makers, homeless services personnel and other stakeholders with useful resources. This briefing paper gives an overview of the main issues, which should be taken into account when addressing alcohol addiction and homelessness. Data map of trans-European surveys on alcohol

As its commitment to the European Commission Alcohol and Health Forum, IAS (Institute of Alcohol Studies) has created a Data Map of English language, trans-European surveys that include questions about alcohol consumption and related matters. Like the UK Data Map which preceded it, the European Data Map is intended as a resource for researchers with an interest in alcohol issues at the European Union level. New Eurocare report on Alcohol market trends

Asia leads the way. As some companies continue to see stagnation and falling sales in Western Europe, their main focus has now shifted to the emerging markets – in particular, Asia and Russia but also Eastern Europe.
Interestingly, despite problems in the global economy, market analysts are forecasting a solid global growth in the industry’s income for the next three years. It is estimated that the financial crisis is likely to help volume growth but slow value growth, as consumers will be more willing to purchase cheaper alcohol and consume it at home. Ständerat bleibt knapp beim Werbeverbot für Bier und Wein

Nachdem der Nationalrat das Media-Abkommen mit der EU mit der Alkoholwerbung im Fernsehen akzeptiert hat, ist gestern der Ständerat, wenn auch knapp mit 21:19 Stimmen, bei seiner Ablehnung geblieben.
