US National Youth Anti Drug Media Campaign

Alcohol-Related Brain Damage and Smoking

Alcohol-Related Brain Damage: Recovery Adversely Affected By Smoking
Alcohol-use disorders (AUDs) can damage the brain, particularly the frontal and parietal cortices, although this damage is at least partially reversible with sustained abstinence from alcohol. Chronic smoking is extremely common among individuals with AUDs. A new study has used longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain blood flow to show that smoking makes it harder for brain blood flow to recover from long-term heavy drinking. Obama’s First Budget Eliminates Drugfree Schools

The first budget plan submitted to Congress by President Barack Obama includes an overall increase in funding for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) but calls for elimination of the Department of Education’s Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities (SDFS) state grants program as part of $17 billion in cuts to programs deemed wasteful or ineffective. USA: Kerlikowske Confirmed as Drug Czar

Former Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as President Barack Obama’s ‚drug czar. The Senate voted 91-1 to approve Kerlikowske’s nomination as director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. During his confirmation hearing, Kerlikowske promised a balanced, science-based approach to fighting illicit-drug use and faced few difficult questions from lawmakers. It’s Official: Kerlikowske to Head ONDCP

Alcohol and cannabis use as risk factors for injury

A case-crossover analysis in a Swiss hospital emergency department (Lausanne). Results: Alcohol use in the six hours prior to injury was associated with a relative risk of 3.00 (C.I.: 1.78, 5.04) compared with no alcohol use, a dose-response relationship also was found. „The most surprising result of our study was the inverse relationship between cannabis us and injury.“ Source: BMC Public Health, 1/29/09
