More Parental Monitoring By The Opposite-Gender Parent Can Indirectly Reduce Alcohol-Related Problems

Donnerstag 17. März 2011 von htm

Young adults whose parents monitor their social interactions may be less likely to display impulsive behavior traits and to have alcohol-related problems, a new study suggests. The level of monitoring is linked to parenting style, and the link is stronger with the parent of the opposite gender.
This study is one of the first to explore the link between parenting style and parental monitoring, as well as to explore the monitoring style of each parent individually, says Julie A. Patock-Peckham, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychology & Neuroscience at Baylor University and one of the study authors. (Source: Medical News Today, 03/16/11)

USA: Alcohol has no place in St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Mittwoch 16. März 2011 von htm

Denver’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade last Saturday was very good, bringing a lot of families downtown to enjoy a cultural display and good family and community fun. I am a first-generation American and very proud of my Irish roots and their contribution to the educational and medical foundations in the USA….
I am very disappointed that open containers are allowed in the parade. Parades are family events. They should not be used for encouraging drinking and rowdy behavior, especially by the participants in the parade. I realize many spectators use this forum as an excuse to drink alcohol and act like fools, but at least the participants should not be allowed to exhibit such behavior. … ( Source: Google Alcohol News, 03/16/11) blogs.denverpost.com, 03/15/11

UK: Wealthier Teens More Likely to Drink Alcohol

Mittwoch 16. März 2011 von htm

Researchers in the U.K have found that teens from more affluent families are more likely to drink than teens in poverty, although having a mother with a higher level of education is a protective factor for teens at any income level, Reuters reported March 14.
The longitudinal study, led by Roberto Melotti of the University of Bristol, surveyed the mothers of 5,837 children when they were pregnant, and followed up with surveys of the children at age thirteen about their use of alcohol and tobacco. (Source: Join Together, 03/15/11)

UK: ‚Responsibility deal‘ announced as health groups withdraw

Mittwoch 16. März 2011 von htm

The Government’s public health Responsibility Deal was announced today, but has been surrounded by controversy as health groups pulled out from the partnerships.
The ‚Responsibility Deal‘ includes pledges on key areas of alcohol, food, behaviour change, physical activity and health at work. But this week 6 health groups involved in the alcohol deal pulled out, saying the pledges would not work and were being overly dictated by industry. Today further health groups including the British Heart Foundation also walked away from the deal. (Source: Alcohol Policy UK, 03/15/11) Comment: The health groups which pulled out now, knew from the beginning, that this cannot work. They showed good will but it is a waste of time and resources to plan prevention with the alcohol industry.
