Economic impact of substance abuse in Indiana, USA

Samstag 18. Dezember 2010 von htm

Substance abuse and addiction have a profound impact on all sectors of society. They are major contributors to a wide range of health and social problems, including domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, crime, chronic health problems, increased mortality, higher healthcare costs, and lost productivity.
The real economic impact of substance abuse is difficult to quantify empirically because there are both direct and indirect consequences…. According to our analysis, a total of $7.3 billion in allocations can be attributed to substance abuse; representing a per-capita share of $1,145. Most of Indiana’s funding is allocated to address the consequences of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use rather than to prevent or reduce its occurrence.
For every dollar Indiana spends on services dealing directly or indirectly with substance use, 66 cents are used for healthcare, while only 1 cent pays for prevention/intervention initiatives. (Source: Alcohol Reports, 12/17/10)

Do changes in state cigarette prices impact current, binge, and heavy drinking?

Samstag 18. Dezember 2010 von htm

Raising prices on alcohol and tobacco products through taxation is a proven strategy to stem their respective use. As nearly 25% of the U.S. population uses alcohol and cigarettes concurrently, it is important to know whether increasing cigarette prices may impact alcohol use–a ‘cross-price effect.‘
This study examines the effects of changes in state cigarette prices on current, binge, and heavy drinking patterns among demographic groups. Six years of cross sectional data are pooled from the 2001-2006 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys (BRFSS), a nationally representative household telephone survey conducted annually with random samples of adults 18 years of age and older.
Preliminary findings indicate that each $1 increase in cigarette price is associated with an 8% increase in the predicted odds of drinking in the past month (p< .05) and a 7% increase in heavy drinking (p<.1). For binge drinking there was no significant effect in preliminary analyses. ... Source: Alcohol Reports, 12/17/10)

Race and sex differences in age at drinking onset and development of alcohol dependence

Samstag 18. Dezember 2010 von htm

Multiple studies have shown that risk for lifetime alcohol dependence is higher in those who initiated drinking at an earlier age; however, few studies have examined this relationship by sex and race subgroups.
The purpose of this study is to investigate sex and race differences in age at first drink and development of alcohol dependence. This study uses data from Wave I of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), a nationally representative sample of 43,093 adults. Those meeting DSM-IV criteria for lifetime alcohol dependence (12.5%) were included in the current analyses. Linear regression was used to compare men and women and Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics on ages at first drink and onset of dependence. (Source: Alcohol Reports, 12/17/10)

Determinants of alcohol dependence in a racially diverse sample of young men

Samstag 18. Dezember 2010 von htm

Alcohol abuse and dependence constitute important health threats across the life course. This is particularly true among young males, who tend to have higher levels of abuse and dependence than females of all ages.
The purpose of this study is to identify the determinants of DSM-IV alcohol abuse and dependence among young men from adolescence to young adulthood.
Data for the study are from four waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The sample for this study includes 4597 men who entered the panel between ages 11 and 19, and who persisted to wave 4 at ages 24 to 32. Latent growth modeling is applied to examine the patterns of alcohol abuse and dependence over time and to understand the major determinants of these patterns. (Source: Alcohol Reports, 12/17/10)

Alcohol Consumption May Increase Amphetamine Abuse

Samstag 18. Dezember 2010 von htm

New research indicates that ingesting moderate amounts of alcohol may increase an individual’s risk of amphetamine abuse.
* Amphetamines are part of a large group of drugs known as stimulants, which are commonly misused in the United States
* A new study shows that the amount of alcohol consumed may increase the likelihood of developing drug abuse
* These results indicate that there is a possible link between drinking and other drug abuse, which can be used in helping define treatment challenges. (Source: Medical News Today, 12/17/10) Comment: And one reason more to undertake effective alcohol prevention according to the WHO Alcohol-Strategy.

Study Suggests Link Between Sudden Infant Death And Alcohol

Samstag 18. Dezember 2010 von htm

Not a happy holiday thought, but an important one: The number of babies who die of SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome, surges by 33 percent on New Year’s Day. The suspected reason? Alcohol consumption by caretakers the night before.
Led by sociologist David Phillips of the University of California, San Diego, the study documenting the dramatic rise in SIDS deaths on New Year’s is published in the journal Addiction. The spike, write Phillips and his coauthors, is beyond the normal winter increase in SIDS.
The study examined 129,090 SIDS cases from 1973 to 2006 using three multiyear nationwide datasets: computerized death certificates, the linked birth and infant death dataset, and the Fatality Analysis Reporting System. The authors say it is the first, large-scale U.S. study to explore possible connections between alcohol and SIDS. (Source: Medical News Today, 12/17/10)

WHO Resolution zur Alkohol-Strategie. Unterstützung von INGO’s

Samstag 18.

–          die Globale Alkohol-Strategie zur Verminderung des schädlichen Gebrauchs von Alkohol zu übernehmen und umzusetzen, um die öffentliche Gesundheitspolitik in den Mitgliedsländern zu ergänzen und zu unterstützen;
–          die Umsetzung der Resolution WHA61.4 über die Strategien, um den schädlichen Gebrauch von Alkohol zu reduzieren und WHA58.26 über Probleme der öffentlichen Gesundheit, die durch den schädlichen Gebrauch von Alkohol verursacht werden;

–          sicherzustellen, dass die Umsetzung der Globalen Alkohol-Strategie zur Verminderung des schädlichen Gebrauchs von Alkohol die nationalen Anstrengungen unterstützt, Risikogruppen zu schützen, Jugendliche und jene, die vom schädlichen Alkoholkonsum anderer betroffen sind;-          sicherzustellen, dass die Umsetzung der Globalen Alkohol-Strategie zur Verminderung des schädlichen Gebrauchs von Alkohol im nationalen Beobachtungssystem reflektiert und regelmässig dem Informationssystem der WHO zu Alkohol und Gesundheit berichtet wird;

– The World Medical Association (Intern.

B.C. addictions study recommends free alcohol for homeless alcoholics

Freitag 17. Dezember 2010 von htm

VANCOUVER – Alcohol is the cheapest drug in B.C., says a report released Thursday by the Centre for Addictions Research, which recommends a hike in liquor prices to reduce illness and injuries.
At the same time, researchers at centre at the University of Victoria recommend setting up a type of safe-drinking program offering free alcohol to homeless alcoholics to reduce their use of hazardous sources such as rubbing alcohol or mouthwash.
It can cost as little as 58 cents for a single-serving drink in B.C. liquor stores, meaning it costs as little as $2.32 for an average woman to exceed national guidelines for daily consumption and as little as $2.80 for an average man, said the report. The report authors looked at the price of every one of the 5,506 products on liquor store shelves in the province and the price of a standard drink ranged from 58 cents to $994.
„There’s quite a lot of very cheap drinks out there,“ said lead researcher Tim Stockwell. (Source: Google Alcohol News, 12/17/10) winnipegfreepress.com, 12/16/10
