A United Kingdom charity group has asked the government to ban alcohol ads from television prior to 9 p.m. and to remove them entirely from the internet, the Guardian reported Oct. 20.
The government-funded agency, Alcohol Concern, proposed the ban after research found more than a million four- to 15-year-olds were exposed to alcohol promotions during England’s participation in World Cup soccer. The total could go as high as five million if all live games, not just England’s, are taken into account. (Source: Join Together, 10/27/10)

What the heck is „drunkorexia?“ That’s when you cut down on food calories and replace them with alcohol, a practice that some college students engage in, according to the Denver Post.
Experts don’t like the term „drunkorexia“ much, but seem resigned to it: Dr. Kenneth L. Weiner, who directs Denver’s Eating Recovery Center, said, „The term ‚drunkorexia‘ is not my favorite, but as it brings awareness to the problem, it’s probably fine.“ (Source: Join Together, 10/26/10)

The revelation this week that sugary, high-alcohol energy drinks helped send nine Washington state college freshmen to the hospital after an off-campus party has renewed public attention on the hazards of the beverages. Several states have enacted or are considering limits or bans on the drinks, and at least two universities have banned them from campus while the Food and Drug Administration reviews their safety. Nach dem Aufschlag auf die Tabaksteuer erwägt die FDP nun auch, Alkohol steuerlich stärker zu belasten. So soll ein Ersatz für die Luftverkehrsabgabe geschaffen werden. Die Steuerbelastung soll dann am Alkoholgehalt gemessen werden. Vor allem Schnäpse würden in diesem Fall deutlich teurer werden.
Die Union reagierte allerdings skeptisch. Wenn es überhaupt Erhöhungen gebe, sollten die Einnahmen dem Gesundheitswesen zugute kommen, erklärte CDU-Gesundheitspolitiker Jens Spahn. Thailand has been planning on implementation of health warning messages on alcoholic beverages, and has notified World Trade Organisation about this proposal, since it is requested to do so as health warning labels might be perceived as an obstacle in trade. Eurocare is sending an Open Letter of Support for the Thailand’s initiative: …“Eurocare would like to take this opportunity to express our enthusiasm for this initiative and congratulate the Thai government for its willingness to take this bold step forward in the fight to tackle alcohol related harm. Some doctors are saying drinks that combine alcohol with caffeine should be banned because they’re dangerous, ABC News reported Oct. 20.
Marketed in large, colorful cans under names like Four Loko, Joose, and Torque, the drinks are popular among college students. The 23.5-ounce canned drinks can contain 12 percent alcohol and 156 milligrams of caffeine, and have encountered increasing criticism. Attorneys general in more than one state are concerned that they’re being marketed to minors, a New Jersey college banned them, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is deciding whether or not the drinks are legal. New research showing that some alcohol in New Zealand (NZ) costs less than bottled water spurred a leading medical organization to come out against the NZ government’s decision not to raises taxes on alcohol.
In a related news release, the New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) called on the NZ government to reconsider its recent decision not raise the excise tax on alcohol — a decision that ran counter to the evidence provided by the NZ Law Commission (pdf), the government-funded agency charged with making informed policy recommendations.
„One of the consequences of alcohol being promoted and sold at pocket-money prices is that we risk losing sight of its status as a legal drug, capable of causing serious harm to others,” said Law Commission President Geoffrey Palmer. (Source: Join Together, 10/22/10)

Der Deutsche Kongress für Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie (DKOU) hat vor einem zunehmenden Mangel an Orthopäden und Unfallchirurgen gewarnt. Er forderte die Politik und Vertreter des Gesundheitssystems auf, gezielte Maßnahmen zur Nachwuchsförderung einzuleiten. „Hoch motivierte Nachwuchskräfte müssen die Lücken der ausscheidenden Kollegen auffüllen“, forderte BVOU-Präsident Helmut Mälzer. Nur so könne gewährleistet werden, dass die steigende Anzahl älterer Patienten weiterhin ausreichend versorgt wird.
