Jugendliche werden durch Zigarettenwerbung zum Rauchen verführt. Das ist das Ergebnis einer Studie der DAK und des Instituts für Therapie und Gesundheits­forschung (IFT-Nord). Demnach neigen Jugendliche umso mehr dazu, selbst zu rauchen, je besser sie die Zigarettenwerbung kennen.
„Das Risiko wenigstens schon einmal geraucht zu haben, verdoppelte sich bei den Jugendlichen der Studie, wenn sie die Zigarettenwerbung gut kannten im Vergleich zu denjenigen, die die Werbung gar nicht oder kaum kannten“, erklärte DAK-Suchtexperte Ralf Kremer. Warum wird diese nicht ebenso stark eingeschränkt?

The threat of underage drinking and overconsumption of alcohol are among the reasons cited by backers of a bill in Congress that would ban direct shipments of wine to consumers. Skeptics said the real reason for the measure is that alcohol distributors want to protect a lucrative part of their business.
Currently, 38 states allow at least some wine to be shipped directly to consumers. The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) has recommended that doctors screen all of their young patients for alcohol use starting in middle school, the Wausau Daily Herald reported May 15.
The AAP Committee on Substance Abuse released a revised policy statement on youth alcohol use on May 1. „A remarkable amount of brain development is still occurring for young people through their 20s,“ said report lead author Patricia Kokotailo of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. „This policy statement provides better evidence about how alcohol affects the brains of young people and why it is important to screen children.“
Committee chair Janet Williams of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio said that most doctors don’t routinely ask about youth alcohol use, and need to know how to provide prevention guidance and where to refer young drinkers to treatment. (Source: Join Together, 5/19/10)

An seiner gestrigen Sitzung hat der Bundesrat die von Finanzminister Merz vorgebrachte Behandlung des Alkoholgesetzes vertagt. Der Entwurf enthielt Bestimmungen für Mindestpreise, die aber auf Grund der starken Opposition der Alkohollobby wieder entfernt worden seien. So kann der Bundesrat die WHO-Resolution zur Alkohol-Strategie abwarten und verinnerlichen, die diese Woche an der WHO-GV verabschiedet werden soll. Mindestpreise für Alkoholika sind wichtig in Verbindung mit einer generellen Alkoholsteuer, damit diese nicht unterlaufen werden kann. Dass sich der Bundesrat von der Alkohollobby immer noch unter Druck setzen lässt, zeigt, dass er vom Primat der Politik über die Wirtschaft noch immer nicht überzeugt ist. Interessant, dass die beiden grossen Zeitungen kein Wort darüber verloren haben.

Heavy alcohol use and binge drinking could increase the risk of pancreatic cancer in men, research from UT Southwestern Medical Center suggests. In a study available online in Cancer Causes and Control, researchers found that the more alcohol a man consumed, the higher his risk of pancreatic cancer compared with those who drank little or no alcohol. „If this relationship continues to be confirmed, reducing heavy and binge drinking may be more important than we already know,“ said Dr. Samir Gupta, assistant professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern and lead author of the study, which was conducted at the University of California, San Francisco. Finbalt survey 1994-2006. Background:
Alcohol consumption has been regarded as an important contributor to the high premature mortality rates. The objective of this paper was to provide an overview and comparison of alcohol consumption and its socio-demographic determinants among adults in Estonia and Finland.
Methods:
The study was based on a 25-64-year-old subsample of nationally representative postal cross-sectional surveys conducted in Estonia (n=10,340) and Finland (n=19,672) during 1994-2006. Abstinence, frequency, and the amount of alcohol consumed were examined. Logistic regression models were used to test the socio-demographic differences in alcohol consumption at least once a week. The effect of socio-demographic factors on pure alcohol consumed per week was calculated using linear regression.
Conclusions:
Alcohol consumption has increased in Estonia and Finland. National alcohol policies should reflect findings of alcohol epidemiology in order to introduce measures that will reduce alcohol related harm in the population effectively. Im Zweifel generelle Ausweiskontrolle: Der Einzelhandel und die Drogenbeauftragte der Bundesregierung haben eine Vereinbarung geschlossen, durch die der Jugendschutz gestärkt werden soll. Das erklären heute in Berlin die Drogenbeauftragte der Bundesregierung, Mechthild Dyckmans, und der Präsident des Handelsverbands Deutschland (HDE), Josef Sanktjohanser.
Neu sind als zentrale Maßnahmen die im Zweifelsfall generelle Ausweiskontrolle bei jugendlich aussehenden Alkoholeinkäufern sowie die Überprüfung durch interne Testkäufe mit Volljährigen. Der Aktionsplan zur Stärkung des Jugendschutzes sieht noch weitere Elemente vor, wie z.B. eine verbesserte Ausbildung des Verkaufspersonals, Schulungen sowie Kundeninformationen.
