Hispanics with alcohol-induced problems – especially male Mexican Americans – have significantly worse health and welfare than those with other ethnic backgrounds. This study examined the influence of gene/environment interaction on alcoholism among Mexican Americans. Polymorphisms Of The Interleukin-1 Gene Complex May Influence Alcohol Dependence
Cytokines are small proteins secreted by cells that serve as molecular messengers between cells. Pro-inflammatory cytokines – which function in the immune system- may be involved in alcohol dependence (AD). A study of three polymorphisms of the interleukin-1 gene complex (IL-1) and one of the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα) has found that IL-1 may directly contribute to AD among Spanish Caucasian males. Alcohol is one of the key health determinants in the European countries which needs to be tackled. Europe is the continent where per capita alcohol consumption is the highest in the world. In established market economies such as the EU Member States the burden of disease and injury attributable to alcohol is estimated to be situated between 8 and 10%.
Combating alcohol-related harm therefore is a public health priority in many Member States, and at EU level. It is not only health consequences in a narrow sense which raise concern. The social dimension has also to be considered: violence, hooliganism, crime, family problems, social exclusion, problems at the workplace and drink driving. All these are areas where political action is needed. There is agreement among the Member States that, beyond individual national efforts, a joint alcohol strategy at Community level is needed. In etablierten Marktwirtschaften wie den EU-Mitgliedstaaten wird die volkswirtschaftliche Belastung durch alkoholbedingte Krankheiten und Unfälle auf 8-10 % geschätzt.
Daher stellt die Bekämpfung alkoholbedingter Schäden in vielen Mitgliedstaaten und auf EU-Ebene eine Priorität des Gesundheitswesens dar. Besorgniserregend sind nicht nur die gesundheitlichen Folgen im engeren Sinne. Auch die soziale Dimension ist zu berücksichtigen: Gewalttaten, Rowdytum, Kriminalität, Familienprobleme, soziale Ausgrenzung, Probleme am Arbeitsplatz und Trunkenheit am Steuer. Dies sind alles Bereiche, in denen politischer Handlungsbedarf besteht. Alcohol advertising would be banned and sales limited by location and time of day under a plan endorsed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev called alcoholism in Russia a „national disaster“ in unveiling plans that also include bans on sales of large containers of beer and prison sentences for those convicted of selling alcohol to youths under age 18. There is a strong relationship between drinking and taking one’s own life. In any given year, people with alcohol dependence (AD) commit more than 20 percent of suicides in the general population; some 80 to 90 percent of AD suicides are by men, mostly white. Individuals who begin drinking at an early age are more likely to subsequently develop alcohol dependence (AD). While age at first drink (AFD) and AD are influenced by similar genetic and environmental factors, AFD may also have an impact on the risk for AD. A new study has found that AFD may facilitate the expression of genes that are already associated with vulnerability to AD symptoms.
