Marc Suhrcke is an economist at the European Office for
Investment for Health and Development of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Martin McKee is Professor of European Public Health at the London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Research Director at the European
Observatory on Health Systems and Policies.
Regina Sauto Arce is Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS).
Svetla Tsolova is Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS).

STUDY ON HEALTH AND THE ECONOMY PUBLISHED
Is health good for the economy of the European Union? This key question is examined in a new report entitled ‘The contribution of health to the economy in the European Union’, based on a study financed by DG Health and Consumer Protection. The report will be presented, at the Gastein European Health Forum which takes place from 5-7 October.
The study reviews an extensive body of research and policy documents from high-income countries to seek an answer to its title question. Among the factors looked at in the report are:
* Studies on the cost-of-illness;
* The impact of health at the individual and household level on labour market outcomes, education and saving;
* The impact of health on the level and the growth rate of national income;
* The impact of health on the welfare system
Based on all the available evidence, the report concludes categorically that health is good for the economy in the European Union. It states that evidence to support this is particularly convincing at individual and household level.
A key message of the report is that better health can have a positive impact on various economic outcomes, and is not merely an automatic by-product of economic progress. As such the study suggests a critical implication for policymakers i.e. there is a powerful justification to invest in health as a means to improve economic outcomes.

Neue Studie über Gesundheit und Wirtschaft veröffentlicht
Ist Gesundheit gut für die Wirtschaft der Europäischen Union? Diese Schlüsselfrage wird in einem neuen Bericht mit dem Titel "Der Beitrag der Gesundheit an die Wirtschaft der EU", basierend auf einer von fer DG (Generaldirektion) Gesundheit und Konsumentenschutz finanzierten Studie untersucht. Der Bericht wird am Gastein Europäisches Gesundheits Forum, das am 5. - 7. Oktober stattfindet, vorgestellt.
Die Studie untersucht eine grosse Zahl von Forschungs- und Politik-Dokumenten von Ländern mit hohem Einkommen, um eine Antwort auf die Titel-Frage zu erhalten. Unter den im Bericht untersuchten Faktoren sind:
*Studien über die Krankheitskosten;
*Der
Einfluss der Gesundheit bei Individuen und Haushalten auf die Entwicklung des
Arbeitsmarktes, die Bildung und das
das Sparen;
*Der Einfluss der Gesundheit auf das Niveau und die Wachstumsrate des Nationaleinkommens;
*Der Einfluss der Gesundheit auf das Wohlfahrtssystem
Auf Grund all der erhältlichen Beweise kommt der Bericht kategorisch zum Ergebnis, dass Gesundheit gut für die Wirtschaft der EU ist. Er sagt, dass die Beweise, die dies unterstützen, vor allem auf der Stufe des Individuums und der Haushalte überzeugend sind.
Eine wesentliche Botschaft des Berichtes ist, dass bessere Gesundheit einen positiven Einfluss auf verschiedene wirtschaftliche Ergebnisse haben kann, und dass sie nicht einfach ein automatisches Beiprodukt des wirtschaftlichen Fortschritts ist. Deshalb legt die Studie eine kritische Folgerung für Politiker nahe: z.B. es gibt starke Gründe, in die Gesundheit zu investieren, als ein Mittel, um wirtschaftliche Ergebnisse zu verbessern.
