In the European Union, domestic violence against women remains an alarming phenomenon, and the most consistent and pervasive human rights violation across the continent.
This timely International Symposium renews the debate on how to work towards an EU-wide strategy on domestic violence. It will provide a platform for the discussion of a better European regulatory framework aimed at strengthening the 3 P’s – prevention, protection and prosecution.

Twelve European health and safety umbrella organisations call for stricter EU-coordinated alcohol policies. In a joint policy statement released today, the twelve organisations urge the EU Council of Ministers of Health:
– to ensure minimum pricing policies, sales restrictions and discount bans in all Member States;
– to introduce a EU- labelling system for alcohol products informing consumers of the specific risks related to alcohol consumption; and
– to adopt the principle of zero tolerance to alcohol consumption before driving or at work and to reduce BAC- levels to 0,2 maximum throughout Europe. (Source: Google Alkohol Alert, 11/27/09) pr.euractiv.com, 11/25/09

A month ago, the North Carolina varsity swimming and diving team had no written or formal alcohol policy.
Five alcohol-related player suspensions later, that approach is a thing of the past. „When we had some abuses, we began to sanction people,” coach Rich DeSelm said. “For some people that was enough. For others it wasn’t.” The result is a zero-tolerance policy for drinking violations that carries a threat of suspension, giving the swimming and diving team one of UNC’s strictest policies. Restaurants in Germany legally sell alcohol to teenagers after their sixteenth birthdays and French children drink wine with dinner at an early age, but U.S. parents who follow this relaxed European example, believing it fosters a healthier attitude toward alcohol, should be careful — it may increase the likelihood that their children binge drink in college.
