Estimating alcohol-related premature mortality in San Francisco

Mittwoch 24. November 2010 von htm

Use of population-attributable fractions from the Global Burden of Disease Study.
Conclusions: Alcohol consumption is a major contributor to premature mortality in San Francisco, especially among males. Interventions to avert alcohol-related harm in San Francisco should be taken at the population level and deserve the same attention that is given to other major risk factors, such as smoking or obesity. San Franciso Mayor Gavin Newsom vetoed a proposed fee on alcohol distribution, the San Franciso Chronicle reported Sept. 22.
The city’s Board of Supervisors had approved the proposal, but there were not enough votes to overturn the veto. Under the proposal, the city planned to collect a surcharge on alcohol distribution to pay for services associated with problem drinking, such as ambulance trips, hospital care, prevention programs, and a sobering center. The Cost of Alcohol to San Francisco

Freitag 16. Juli 2010 von htm

To support a proposed new local fee on alcohol sales, the San Francisco Controller’s office commissioned a „nexus study“ to analyze the actual costs incurred by the city from alcohol use. Titled, The Cost of Alcohol to San Francisco – Analyses Supporting an Alcohol Mitigation Fee, the recently-released study found $17.7 million in direct unreimbursed expenses for alcohol-related harm. These expenses were incurred by community behavioral health services, fire department emergency medical transport, San Francisco General Hospital, and the Sheriff’s department. Because the study only considered health costs, excluding crime and other costs, $17.7 million is a very conservative amount. (Source: Marin Institute, 7/12/10)

“Charge for Harm” Alcohol Mitigation Fee Program Introduced

Freitag 2. Juli 2010 von htm

… by San Francisco Supervisor Avalos. San Francisco has broken new ground again by introducing a broad, local alcohol mitigation fee program, to charge alcohol wholesalers for related city and county services. On Thursday the Comptroller’s office is expected to release a “nexus” study showing the relationship of alcohol sales to costs for community behavioral health services, firefighter emergency medical transport and Sheriff inebriate holding costs.
“San Francisco government agencies cannot continue to subsidize the alcohol industry. Alcohol consumption costs San Francisco residents tens of millions of dollars in harm every year,” said Bruce Lee Livingston, executive director of Marin Institute. “It’s time for Big Alcohol, including wholesalers, to pay its fair share. A local alcohol charge for harm fee is long overdue.” (Source: Marin Institute, 6/30/10) Press Release – – – Local Fee Fact Sheet

Mittwoch 21.

(Quelle: Tages-Anzeiger, 21.4.10)
