Alcohol use is the third greatest contributor to the global burden of disease, estimated to cause 3.8% of all deaths. Among people aged 15 to 44 years, alcohol is estimated to result in 4.6% of all disability-adjusted life years lost and a disproportionate number of fatal injuries. 2 Heavy drinking is classified as the consumption of more than 210 g of alcohol per week for men and more than 140 g per week for women, owing to differences in clearance and body size. As a metabolic poison, heavy alcohol use is
associated with cardiovascular disease, oral cancers and liver cirrhosis. As an intoxicant, it causes dependency, injuries and trauma as well as substantial social harms. DOI:10.1503/cmaj.110029 our Online-Comment: In May 2010 the General Assembly of the World Health Organization held in Geneva accepted with all votes of the 193 member states a Resolution on a global Alcohol Strategy. In it the evidence-based measures are listed which reduce the general consumption of alcohol in a given society. No need to wait any longer.

Zu wenig Personal, immer mehr Aufgaben und zunehmende Gewalt gegen Polizeibeamte haben ihn zu einer Resolution veranlasst.
Was die Delegierten des Verbands Schweizerischer Polizeibeamter gestern in Luzern als Forderung an ihre Polizeikommandanten und die Politik verabschiedet haben, ging über den Antrag des Vorstandes hinaus. Dieser hatte fünf Hauptanliegen formuliert:
– Stopp der Gewalt gegen die Polizei
– mindestens 1500 oder rund zehn Prozent mehr Polizisten gegen den akuten Personalmangel
– mehr Lohn und Erholungszeit, um die regelmässigen Zusatzdienste an Fussball- und Eishockeyspielen an Wochenenden zu kompensieren
– keine Delegation des staatlichen Gewaltmonopols an private Sicherheitsdienste

NEW DELHI: India will soon crack the whip on binge drinking through higher taxes and tighter marketing regulations against alcoholic products.
For the first time, delegations from all 193 member states of the World Health Organization reached consensus at the World Health Assembly on a resolution to confront the abuse of alcohol. Target areas were identified for policy options, including community action, pricing policies and reducing the public health impact of illicit alcohol and informally produced alcohol.
WHO says that every year, the abuse of alcohol kills 2.5 million people, including 3.2 lakh young people between 15 and 29 years of age. It is the eighth leading risk factor for deaths globally. WHO estimates there are two billion alcohol consumers worldwide.
India has a lot to worry about as far as alcohol consumption is concerned. The average age of alcohol consumption in the country has fallen by nearly nine years over the past decade. At present, on an average, Indians take their first sip of alcohol at the age of 19 compared to 28 in the 1990s. Studies now say that in another 5-7 years, a majority of Indians will start consuming alcohol at the age of 15.
Nearly 62.5 million people in India at present drink alcohol with the per capita consumption being around four litres per adult per year. For every six men, one woman drinks alcohol in India. Höhere Preise und Steuern für alkoholische Getränke und striktere Vorgaben für die Vermarktungsstrategien der Alkoholkonzerne sowie kürzere Öffnungszeiten für Bars und Clubs sieht der neueste Beschluss der WHO vor. Damit will die WHO gegen das weltweite Problem des Alkoholmissbrauchs vorgehen. Weltweit an dritter Stelle steht Alkohol als Grund für vorzeitiges Ableben und Behinderungen. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) hat am Donnerstag eine globale Strategie gegen Alkoholmissbrauch beschlossen. Die insgesamt 193 Mitgliedstaaten einigten sich auf eine Fülle unverbindlicher Maßnahmen gegen gefährliches Trinkverhalten. Hoffen wir nun, dass diese Empfehlungen in den Ländern aufgenommen und umgesetzt werden, damit möglichst bald weltweit die Lebensqualität steigen kann.

On the 20th of May, the World Health Assembly passed a resolution that endorsed a Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol. The strategy highlights the effectiveness of focusing on evidence-based policies regarding pricing, availability and marketing of alcoholic beverages.
When addressing alcohol marketing, the strategy describes the need to limit the volume of alcohol marketing in order to decrease alcohol-related harm. Additionally, alcohol advertising appealing to youth is a serious issue mentioned. International marketing techniques and advertising and sponsorship of alcohol in various new media is mentioned as a significant concern in some countries. The strategy addresses, in particular, the potential harmful effects to young people in lower and middle-inclime countries with a current low prevalence of alcohol consumption or high abstinence rates. Am 22.5.09 hat die 62. WHO-GV die Resolution 62.14 verabschiedet, Reduktion der Gesundheits-Ungleichheiten durch Aktion bei den sozialen Gesundheitsfaktoren. Die Resolution ist die Grundlage für den Bericht der Kommission für soziale Gesundheitsfaktoren, Die Lücke in einer Generation schliessen.
