Conflict over liquor sachets in Malawi

Malawi now experiences a conflict over liquor sachets. Government and NGOs versus alcohol producers. Health versus profits. Also other countries in Africa face problems with the small plastic bags with strong liquor.
A few years ago a variety of small plastic sachets with 40 % spirits were introduced to the markets place in a number of African countries. Now problems have become very visible from the sale and use of such alcoholic beverages, in particular among the youth and the poor. This has resulted in public outcry and political discussions in an attempt to do something to the problem.
In Malawi there was an encouraging political process last year which aimed at banning the sale of liquor in plastic sachets. Now, as a result of a court decision, the process has stalled. Governments and NGOs have their hands tied up by the court injunction, while the strong liquor continues to be sold to minors, through legal and illegal channels. Alcohol policy training in Malawi and Botswana

Malawi and Botswana became the two first countries to test a new training package on evidence-based alcohol policies. A third pilot course will be held in Namibia next week.
The new training program has been developed by FORUT and Blue Cross Norway. The background for the initiative is that there exists a broad knowledge base on which types of interventions that are most effective to reduce alcohol-related harm. However, there is a severe information gap. The existing knowledge is not sufficiently distributed to those who need it most; policy makers, politicians, government experts, NGO leaders and the media. Drinks industry supplanting government role in alcohol policies in sub-Saharan Africa

Article published today in Addiction: „Alcohol policies out of context: Drinks industry supplanting government role in alcohol policies in Sub-Saharan Africa“.
A recent comparison of proposed national alcohol policies in Lesotho, Malawi, Uganda, and Botswana shows that the drinks industry has assumed a significant and detrimental role in designing national alcohol policies in Sub-Saharan Africa. The policy drafts point to the alcohol industry’s preferred version of a national alcohol policy, which includes letting the industry regulate its own marketing activities.
In the study authors Øystein Bakke and Dag Endal found that that alcohol policy documents from the four African countries were almost identical, and were likely based on a single source document that reflects alcohol industry interests. That source document originates from a series of alcohol policy initiatives in Sub-Saharan countries sponsored by multinational brewer SABMiller and the International Center on Alcohol Policies (ICAP), an alcohol industry-funded organisation. Carlsberg bricht seinen Verhaltenskodex in Malawi

Carlsberg, der dänische Biergigant, wurde heftig wegen seiner Marketing-Praktiken in Malawi kritisiert, einem der ärmsten Länder weltweit, das zahlreiche Alkoholprobleme hat. Kaliber, ein schwedischen Radioprogramm, das bekannt ist für guten Recherchier-Journalismus, sendete letztes Wochenende ein Programm über den Alkoholkonsum in Malawi und die Rolle der internationalen Alkoholindustrie, speziell die von Carlsberg. das Programm hören (Schwedisch).

Carlsberg’s criticised marketing practices in Africa

Carlsberg’s breach of its code of conduct. Carlsberg, the Danish beer giant, has been heavily criticised for its marketing practices in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, which has numerous alcohol problems. Kaliber, a Swedish National Radio programme known for its well researched journalism, aired last weekend a program about alcohol consumption in Malawi and the role of the international alcohol industries, especially Carlsberg.
