Cracking Down on Drunken Driving in New York State

Freitag 27. November 2009 von htm

„The national effort to reduce death and injuries from drunken driving has received a major boost from New York State. Gov. David Paterson signed a law that made New York among the first states to make it a felony to drive while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle. The new law also made New York one of a dozen states to require all convicted drunken drivers to use an ignition interlock device that prevents them from driving their cars if they are drunk.“ (Source: Harvard World Health News, 11/25/09) The New York Times, 11/22/09 (We reported on 11/20/09)

Drunk Drivers with Kids in Car Could Face Felonies in N.Y.

Freitag 20. November 2009 von htm

The New York state Assembly has passed a bill that would make it a felony offense to drive while intoxicated if children under age 16 are in the vehicle, the New York Times reported Nov. 18.
The bill also would require first-time convicted drunk drivers to install ignition-interlock devices on their cars to prevent repeat offenses.
Currently, only Arizona makes it a felony offense to drive drunk with children; about a dozen states require the ignition-interlock devices, which prevent the engine from starting if a breath sample reveals the presence of alcohol. New Yorkers convicted of felony drunk driving would face up to four years in prison under the bill. (Source: Join Together, 11/19/09)
