Dienstag 14. Juni 2011 von htm

More than two dozen West Virginia youth from Cabell, Greenbrier and Kanawha counties will star in new public service announcements (PSAs)
designed to raise awareness of and prevent underage drinking. Earlier this year, the teams of youth from Cabell County’s Substance Abuse
Prevention Coalition, the Marshall University Ad Club, Greenbrier East High School and the South Charleston Housing Authority submitted draft scripts for this year’s 2011 PSA Challenge. This month, the youth will fine-tune their scripts and work with the Tri-State CW and WV Radio Corporation to produce the television and radio spots. … (Source: Alcohol Reports, 06/13/11) prevnet.org, 06/13/11 Comment: This could be an idea for other regions too.

Low Levels of Awareness, Knowledge and Use in the Swedish Population

Montag 13. Juni 2011 von htm

Hazardous Drinking Concepts, Limits and Methods.
To investigate the awareness and knowledge of hazardous drinking limits among the general population in Sweden and the extent to which people estimate their alcohol consumption in standard drinks to assess their level of drinking.
A population-based study involving 6000 individuals selected from the total Swedish population was performed. Data were collected by means of a postal questionnaire. The mail survey response rate was 54.3% (n = 3200) of the net sample of 5891 persons. …
The results can be seen as a major challenge for the health-care system and public health authorities because they imply that a large proportion of the Swedish population does not know when alcohol consumption becomes a threat to their health. The current strategy to disseminate knowledge about sensible drinking limits to the population through the health-care system seems to have failed and new means of informing the population are warranted. Police begin week-long alcohol and drug operation on Europe’s roads

Mittwoch 8. Juni 2011 von htm

Police officers across more than 25 European countries, including the UK, today begin a seven-day crackdown on drink driving and drugged driving. The operation is co-ordinated by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network.
Chief Superintendent Pasi Kemppainen, chairman of TISPOL’s strategic alcohol and drugs working group, commented: “We know that driving while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs remains one of the ‘big three’ killers on Europe’s roads, along with speeding and non-wearing of seatbelts.
“Although police officers are looking for drink drivers and drugged drivers throughout the year, this high-profile week-long operation is meant to raise awareness of the dangers that go with driving with alcohol or drugs (both medicinal and illicit) in your system. Media coverage of health issues and how to work more effectively with journalists

Donnerstag 9. September 2010 von htm

Background: The mass media has enormous potential to influence health-related behaviours and perceptions. Much research has focused on how the media frames health issues. This study sought to explore how journalists in Australia select and shape news on health issues.
Results: Journalists routinely attempted to balance different, sometimes competing, aims amidst significant operational constraints. They perceived the most trusted sources on health issues to be respected and independent doctors. Specialist health and medical reporters had a more sound technical knowledge, channels to appropriate sources, power within their organizations, and ability to advocate for better quality coverage.
Conclusions: An awareness of how to work with the media is essential for health communicators. This includes understanding journalists‘ daily routines, being available, providing resources, and building relationships with specialist health reporters. (Source: BMC Public Health, 9/08/10) Comment: Unfortunately regarding studies on alcohol there are more criteria, e.g. the policy of the editor (his dependence on the alcohol industry) and a possible more or less alcohol dependency of the journalist.

English drinking less alcohol, but deaths are rising

Freitag 28. Mai 2010 von htm

Fewer children are abusing booze but deaths are rising as north-south drinks divide opens in England.
Deaths from alcohol in England climbed to 6,769 in 2008, liver disease was the most common cause. Fatalities have risen by 24% since 2001. The figures, revealing a surge in prescriptions for medicines to treat alcoholism and a slight decrease in overall consumption, suggest that awareness of the health dangers and, possibly, the recession may be having some impact.
A cultural divide in drinking habits appears to be opening up between southern and northern England, with far less being drunk in London than elsewhere in the country. If overall consumption is falling, death rates – which chiefly reflect long term physical damage – will take some time to reflect any change.
