UK: Survey reveals cost of alcohol to society

Alcohol’s role in everything from injury and relationship breakdown to trouble with the police, emerges in a poll of 2,221 people commissioned by the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG).
According to the survey, some 11% of people polled have seen a friend or relative’s relationship end as a direct result of heavy drinking. One in five (21%) know someone who has driven while over the legal alcohol limit. And 51% know someone who has been a victim of alcohol-related violence, or has been attacked themselves.
The survey also found that 14% of children are being brought up in a family where at least one adult has a drink problem.

Pilot arrested at Heathrow before takeoff on alcohol charges

Daily alcohol limit ‚unhelpful‘

(The units in a glass of wine can range from 1.5 to over 3.) Daily limits on alcohol consumption are meaningless and potentially harmful, experts have warned. The government says men should drink no more than three to four units per day and women no more than two to three. Liver specialist Dr Nick Sheron, of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK, says these limits were devised by civil servants with „no good evidence“ for doing. Alabama, USA, Legalizes Stronger Beer

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley has approved legislation allowing beer with higher alcohol content to be sold in restaurants, bars and some retail stores. The legislation raises the legal alcohol limit on beer from 6 percent to 13.9 percent by volume, allowing previously banned specialty and imported beers to be sold in the state.
