The monumental task of persuading children and adolescents to say „No“ to drugs, alcohol and tobacco is being constantly undermined by the $25 billions‘ worth of advertising and marketing each year, which has precisely the opposite effect, says the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
A new AAP policy statement – „Children, Adolescents, Substance Abuse and the Media“ – appears in the latest issue of the peer reviewed medical journal Pediatrics. The policy statement calls for a total ban on all tobacco advertising, restrictions on the advertising of alcoholic drinks, and a ban on erectile dysfunction drug ads before 10pm. Die Bundesregierung steht wegen ihrer Pläne zur Hartz-IV-Reform in der Kritik. Nur fünf Euro mehr werden die 6,7 Millionen Hartz-IV-Empfänger in Deutschland demnächst erhalten. Nach dem Willen der schwarz-gelben Koalition soll das Arbeitslosengeld II für Erwachsene ab 2011 von 359 auf 364 Euro monatlich steigen. Dies hat am Sonntag eine Spitzenrunde unter Leitung von Kanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) beschlossen. Aber im Bundesrat hat die Regierung keine Mehrheit und die linken Parteien sind für mehr Mittel. Mit solchen Panik-Meldungen versucht die Alkohollobby, (die Autorin „nansy“ ist dafür bekannt) das Publikum aufzuschrecken, damit es voll emotional statt vernünftig auf eventuelle Präventionsversuche der Regierungen reagiert.
Weder gibt es bei Tabak Prohibition, noch wird der Alkohol jemals verboten. Es liegt aber in der Verantwortung der EU-Kommission, für das Wohl der Mitbürgerinnen und Mitbürger zu sorgen. Und da spielen die Zivilisationskrankheiten, die mit dem Konsum von Suchtmitteln in Zusammenhang stehen, eine wesentliche Rolle. Sowohl die WHO als auch die EU haben nun nach langen Untersuchungsperioden und Diskussionen erst beim Tabak und die WHO im Mai auch beim Alkohol Massnahmen vorgeschlagen, die den Konsum und damit die Schäden reduzieren. Nur sind die Regierungen der Mitgliedsländer frei, diese zu übernehmen. Und da liegt das Problem. Regierungen, die stark mit der Alkoholindustrie verbunden sind, wie die deutsche, bremsen, wo sie nur können. Sie wissen sich von der Mehrheit im Volk unterstützt, weil dieses falsch informiert und deshalb nicht in der Lage ist, die Regierung zum Handeln zu drängen. Die WHO nennt dies ein Volk von Passivtrinkern. Sie bezahlen ein Leben lang ungefragt die horrenden alkoholbedingten Sozialkosten und tragen die verminderte Lebensqualität. Den Gewinn hat die Alkoholindstrie.

Im Zürcher Hauptbahnhof ist am frühen Sonntagmorgen ein 22-jähriger Mann von einer Gruppe von Männern niedergeschlagen und beraubt worden. Zuvor hatte er sich für eine junge Frau eingesetzt, die von der Gruppe sexuell belästigt worden war. Sechs Männer wurden verhaftet. Blood alcohol levels below the current legal limit for driving have a significant negative effect on a person’s dexterity. Researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Research Notes found that just two single vodka and orange drinks were enough to make senior volunteers struggle at an obstacle avoidance test while walking.
Judith Hegeman worked with a team of researchers from Sint Maartenskliniek, Nijmegen, The Netherlands, to carry out the tests in 13 healthy men and women (average age 61.5yrs or 62yrs). She said, „The results clearly show that even with low blood alcohol concentrations, reactions to sudden gait perturbations are seriously affected. After ingestion of 2 alcoholic drinks, obstacles were hit twice as often, response times were delayed and response amplitudes were reduced. Background: Social factors could offer useful information for planning prevention strategy for cardiovascular diseases. This analysis aims to explore the relationship between education, marital status and major cardiovascular risk factors and to evaluate the role of social status indicators in predicting cardiovascular events and deaths in several Italian cohorts.
Conclusions: Preventive interventions on cardiovascular risk should be addressed mostly to people with less education. Cardiovascular risk score and case-fatality resulted higher in men living alone while cardiovascular factors were higher in women married or cohabitating. Such gender differences seem peculiar of our population and require further research on unexpected cultural and behavioural influences. Source: BioMed Central Public Health, 9/24/10)

San Franciso Mayor Gavin Newsom vetoed a proposed fee on alcohol distribution, the San Franciso Chronicle reported Sept. 22.
The city’s Board of Supervisors had approved the proposal, but there were not enough votes to overturn the veto. Under the proposal, the city planned to collect a surcharge on alcohol distribution to pay for services associated with problem drinking, such as ambulance trips, hospital care, prevention programs, and a sobering center. Emergency doctors from Britain’s College of Emergency Medicine have called for wide-ranging policy changes designed to limit alcohol-related injuries, The Guardian reported Sept. 21.
The sweeping set of recommendations included a call for minimum pricing for alcohol to discourage use; clearer labeling on alcoholic beverages; better training for bar workers so they can refuse service to drunk patrons; an end to alcohol advertising targeted at young people; and no more happy hours. An Australian study found that restrictions on pub closing times in Newcastle, New South Wales, reduced assault rates in the city by 37 percent, the Newcastle Herald reported Sept. 16.
Earlier closing times were instituted to combat high rates of alcohol-related violence in the city, according to lead author, Kypros Kypri, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine and public health at the University of Newcastle, Callaghan, New South Wales. (Source: Join Together, 9/24/10)

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, along with MusiCares and the GRAMMY Foundation — the two nonprofit organizations of The Recording Academy — announced the MusiCares and GRAMMY Foundation Teen Substance Abuse Awareness through Music Contest.
The contest asks young musicians, ages 14-18, to compose or create an original song and/or music video that explores, encourages, and celebrates a healthy lifestyle or accurately depicts a story about drug abuse.
