Captain Morgan, A True Pirate of the Caribbean
Donnerstag 30. Juli 2009 von htm
Turns out you do have a little Captain in you — or at least the taxpayer in you. That’s because when Congress passed TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program), the $700 billion dollar bailout to save the banks from economic disaster–it also slipped into the bill billions in tax benefits to alcohol giant Diageo, makers of Captain Morgan.
So while the economy is tanking, Diageo gets $2.7 billion of your tax dollars (over 30 years) to subsidize its rum factory. Moreover, Diageo is a non-U.S. company (its headquarters are in London), which means that the largest bailout given to a foreign company will fuel profits that you, U.S. taxpayer, won’t derive any economic benefit from. If you’re steaming now, you’re not alone. (Source: Marin Institute, 7/9/09)
